The Importance of Being Bilbo — 2 Comments

  1. Dear Anne Marie,
This morning I noted a request to approve a link to my blog and, with great delight, saw that it was to your website. For over a year my work as a busy parish priest, here in Tolkien’s Shire, meant that I gave no attention to the blog. And then came a total lockdown in England and I began to write again. It helped me to find shape and structure in a week without my usual duties and now it has become a part of my life again.
It was so good to read your thoughts on Bilbo’s spiritual journey as recounted by Tolkien. I would love to imagine myself as a son of Númenor, like Aragorn, a pilgrim and knight errant in search of my destiny, but I am pretty sure that I have a hobbit soul like Bilbo and that adventure has to come knocking on my door as it did for him.
By the way, I particularly liked your insight that it was the power of the Ring to render its wearer invisible while being able to see others, a power that was intended to give the wearer the ability to control or even kill, that in Bilbo’s hands evoked pity rather than contempt. Sauron could never have predicted this!

    • Hi! Long time, no talk. Thanks so much for your comment and good to hear from you! I was wondering what happened to you and glad to hear you are well and back to writing. 🙂 This site is going down very shortly and Gazzolocreative.com will rise after that. I am now focusing on my own sub-creations but there will be more essays coming from Middle-earth through the rest of the year once the new site is up.

Namarie, God bless, Anne Marie 🙂
