Fantasy Friday Book Recommendation: The Blades of Karik by Evan Oliver
Welcome back to Fantasy Friday!
In a time of dragons, jarls and kings, immortal tales are told of bravery and valour…
And on the Isle of Vrania, where seafaring and raiding are a way of life, no songs are sung more than those of the blades, deeds and shield-brothers of the great and gallant Karik – forefather of a family which brought prosperity and honour, before their name fell to curse and condemnation.
Now, years later, their ancestors relive their gallant feats: a brave young suitor, willing to risk all to slay a formidable dragon and win his bride; an eager raider, who dreams of plunder in the prosperous west; a hot-headed shipbuilder willing to do battle with a king…
A trilogy of stories, interconnected by the glory and bravery of those who bear the famous and infamous blades of Karik…
Why I loved this book: You can get this free by signing up for Evan’s email list. This is why you should: The first of the three short stories is great. It is like hanging out with a brother of Smaug and on the Lonely Mountain. The heroes are well-drawn. It struck me as very Hobbit-like in feel, though without any dwarves or people with furry feet. The second story is also good, well-written, engaging Viking-like warriors on a voyage at sea. I did not enjoy the third story as much as the other two, but it is definitely worth checking out! I look forward to read more from him.
